“He is clearly the best player on Grass” Mats Wilander backs Novak Djokovic to break Roger Federer’s Wimbledon record

World No. 3 and the 3-time defending champion at the 2022 Wimbledon Championships, Novak Djokovic is into the 4th round at the Grand Slam for the 14th time in his 17th appearance at the tournament. The top seed this year took down compatriot Miomir Kecmanovic in straight-sets including a first-set bagel to win the match 6-0, 6-3, 6-4 and advance ahead.
Novak is now on a 24-match unbeaten streak at Wimbledon and 35-match winning streak on the Center Court asserting and stamping his authority at the historic venue. While he will be unfortunate to lose all of his 2000 points from last year’s Championships due to the ATP’s decision to remove ranking points in retaliation to Wimbledon’s decision to ban Russian and Belarusian athletes, the Serb has made his ambition of winning a major and the ranking not being an ambition that he is now chasing in his career.
“A certain Rafa Nadal keeps surprising us”: Mats Wilander on Novak Djokovic’s biggest problem
Novak is eyeing his 7th Wimbledon title this year which will put him level on Pete Sampras‘ tally of 7 majors and bring him closer to Roger Federer‘s all-time men’s record of 8 Wimbledon titles. Martina Navratilova currently boasts the all-time record with 9 Wimbledon titles to his name. A 7th Wimbledon trophy this year will take Djokovic to 21 majors, one ahead of Federer and one behind Rafael Nadal who is the owner of 22 Grand Slams after a brilliant outing in majors this season. Nevertheless, Mats Wilander backs the Serb to clinch all those records.
“I do believe he has a good chance. I think that he is clearly the best player on grass and has been for the last few years. He’s getting better every time I see him play. It’s more clear to him what he needs to do on the grass court, how he needs to move when he can slide to not slip and the way he has understood to move on a grass court. There’s a really good chance he reaches eight Wimbledon titles and that he ends up with the most Grand Slam titles out of all of them. But of course, a certain Rafa Nadal keeps surprising us,” said Wilander speaking on Eurosport.
While Novak is younger than Nadal by a year and given the Spaniard’s consistent fitness issues, one might back the Serbian to break the record. But the Serb is facing omission from majors as he is set to miss the 2022 US Open as well due to being unvaccinated against Covid-19 losing another chance at grabbing a Grand Slam.
