Carlos Alcaraz faced Jan-Lennard Struff, currently ranked number 149 in the world in the first round of Wimbledon 2022. Hoping to make his mark in Wimbledon after a great season in 2022, he faced a very highly ranked German but was put immediately under pressure as he lost the first set 6-4. After winning the second set 7-5, it seemed like things would start going his way, but Struff struck again to take the third set 6-4.
Things looked dire for the young phenom in the third set as both the players held their serve to put the fate of the match on the fourth-set tiebreaker. But Alcaraz came through in the tiebreaker to push his match into the final set. Alcaraz finally broke Struff in the fifth set at 5-4 and served out the match to clinch the final set 6-4 and match. He advanced to the second round for the second year in a row and he would aim to go a lot further.

In the on-court interview Alcaraz said: “I feel pretty good. Playing here is amazing, got the win after this unbelievable match is amazing, amazing for me.” He served 30 aces in the match and that is one of the biggest reasons he outlasted a specialist like Struff. He said: “I didn’t expect to move as well as I did today. I played really well, I felt really well playing on grass and still don’t know how i served today. This was probably my best match serving. That’s why I won today for the serve, for sure.”
On his long match, Alcaraz said: “Starting Wimbledon five set last year, this year the same, this means I like playing on grass. I don’t want to leave the court, of course playing in front of such a great crowd is amazing. So, thanks for the support from the beginning of the match.” Fans were estactic after the sizzling comeback by the teenager. They were impressed by his mental fortitude and his tennis.
