Mats Wilander hopes Nick Kyrgios will win a grand slam

Novak Djokovic has been crowned the Wimbledon champion in this year’s championship where he defeated Nick Kyrgios who was playing his first major finals. Novak defeated 40th ranked Kyrgios with 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 7-6.

The Australian looked composed in the first set but couldn’t carry the same level of composure in later rounds which cost him his first ever grand slam. Kyrgios was aiming for his first major title at Wimbledon, and looked competitive throughout the tournament. He also became the first unseeded player in 19 years to reach Wimbledon men’s singles final.

Mats wilander believes Nick Kyrgios knows that he can win a grand slam

Mats Arne Olof Wilander is a Swedish former world No. 1 tennis player. From 1982 to 1988, he won seven Grand Slam singles titles (three at the French Open, three at the Australian Open, and one at the US Open), and one Grand Slam men’s doubles title (at Wimbledon). His breakthrough came suddenly and unexpectedly when he won the 1982 French Open at the age of 17.

Wilander at Eurosports talked about how the men’s singles title would’ve been a ‘cherry on top’ of Nick Kyrgios’ recent performance at Wimbledon.

Wilander “To Novak Djokovic, I don’t think it makes any difference whether he is the world No. 7 or world No. 1. For him, it’s all about Wimbledon titles and Grand Slam titles and being the best in history.

“It will be interesting to be a fly on the wall as Nick recovers. He won’t have regrets looking back at this final because it would have been great to win, but it could have been too much for the future of his career. It could be the best result because it will motivate him to keep coming back. He knows he can win a Grand Slam, he was so close. He is so fun and when he behaves like how he did today, it’s outside what we think is ‘normal’, but Nick, please stay healthy and keep it up.”
