Former world number 5, Gonzalez gave an interview to Clay, where he talked about Kyrgios and said, “He (Kyrgios) is someone very controversial, he is rebellious, he does not cause indifference, some may love him, others hate him. He sells a lot, unfortunately sometimes with negative things. It is necessary because he leaves the rules of tennis within the rules. Bring in a lot of new fans. He is a great athlete, and an excellent tennis player. He plays to take the pressure off, like when he says that he was going to the bar. Others may do the same but remain silent.“
When asked about the outcome of a match between Kyrgios and Gonzalez in his prime, the Chilean said, “I don’t know how I would have handled it, but the closest thing I experienced was perhaps (Radek) Stepanek, who tried to get you out and played with it. They use that resource, they are very intelligent and lively, and they know how to use it to their advantage. Surely more than one pitch would have gone back and forth.“
