Djokovic has 21 grand slams to his name, only 1 behind his biggest rival Rafael Nadal, Djokovic is in the media’s attention this year due to his unvaccinated status which resulted in him missing the Australian Open. He is also most likely to miss the US Open this year.
The popularity of Djokovic has however been increasing as despite the setbacks off the court, he has maintained his playing level which was on display during the Clay season and then at the 2022 Wimbledon Championships where he won his 7th Wimbledon title and overtook Roger Federer‘s tally of 20 Grand Slam titles.

Djokovic is self-professedly a private person but he knows his popularity is a part of his success. He tries to remain humble and patient during trying times. When asked about his fame during his interview with Graham Bensinger, Djokovic said, “I don’t like it that much to be honest with you, really not. I accept it but I don’t like it, I don’t like seeing myself everywhere. But I know it’s part of what I do and part of my success.”
He further added, “My father particularly likes to show that his son is successful and I understand that. Right above the restaurant that my parents run, in that building, he has permission, I guess, to put up huge banners of me with different trophies and things he likes, so you can see it from the highway when entering the city.” The Serbian tennis star’s father Srdjan Djokovic has alaways made the news with his controversial comments about his son and his rivals.
The former world number 1 is a big celebrity back home in Serbia. After his Wimbledon 2022 win, he celebrated big in Belgrade. He was greeted by thousands of fans in front of the Belgrade City Hall. Currently, the US Open vaccine mandates are not in Djokovic’s favour with only a week to go till the tournament. Djokovic tweeted his appreciation for the support he got from tennis fans and said he’s preparing for the US Open despite the circumstances.
