“He should just enter via our southern border … no vax requirement there,” Novak Djokovic’s US Open ban causes a political upsurge on social media

Novak Djokovic

There hasn’t been a more dramatic and chaotic season in Novak Djokovic‘s career than the 2022 season. The Serb started his season with turmoil in Australia where he was denied entry and got his visa canceled due to his vaccination status. After 10 days of tussle, he was eventually deported and wasn’t allowed to defend his Australian Open title.

He was denied entry into the USA later and hence wasn’t allowed to compete at the Golden Swing- Indian Wells Masters and Miami Masters. He had a poor start to his clay season and later lost to Rafael Nadal in the quarterfinal of the French Open. To date, he has managed to win just one title this season and has also slipped to No.3 in the World Rankings. To his misery, there won’t be any points awarded this year at Wimbledon and hence he will lose 2000 points from last year which will push him outside the Top 5.

And now, the USA has also confirmed that “unvaccinated foreigners” will not be allowed to enter the country which means that Djokovic will miss the US Open too. The rule is very absurd because most of the people in the country are vaccinated and imposing something on someone in these ‘not so extreme’ times doesn’t seem logical.

Fans on social media have a varied range of opinions. While many think that the ruling is very extreme, some feel that the USTA should interfere and ask for an exemption. Some even feel that the US government has every right to impose safer laws for its citizens.
