Former World No. 1 Roger Federer continues to remain on the sidelines as he is preparing for the remainder of the season where he looks to return to action having been absent on the Tour ever since his quarter-final exit at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships. Away from tennis currently is former World No. 5 and runner-up of the 2007 Australian Open, Fernando Gonzalez. The Chilean great won 11 Tour titles and was known for his explosive forehand which led to the moniker ‘Hand of Stone’. Gonzalez lost his only Grand Slam final to Federer, one of his 12 defeats to the Swiss Maestro who leads the head-to-head 12-1 against Gonzalez with Fernando winning his only match against Roger in the 2007 Tennis Masters Cup in Shanghai having suffered 10 consecutive defeats earlier.

“He will want to say goodbye at some point, but if he comes back, I think he will go for something important, with the level he has. I don’t know how he will be for five sets, but for three, he has to play a while longer. It is relative, because Roger knows himself well, more than a young tennis player knows himself.

“The physical issue is more noticeable in the recovery when he has to prepare for the next game. It will be hard for him. I don’t know if he is going to be able to win a Grand Slam, but in three-set tournaments, I think he will do something interesting,” predicted Gonzalez speaking with Claytenis.
