“He will win” Chris Evert confident about Novak Djokovic going all the way at Wimbledon 2022

Chris Evert praises Novak Djokovic

Chris Evert, a former American top-ranked player in the world, has predicted that it will be Novak Djokovic who is best placed to win the Wimbledon 2022.

“Djokovic will win because he loves grass and is comfortable with his mobility on a sometimes delicate surface. It has the best combination of service and returns and, mentally, it is as solid as a rock,” she said.

After his first-round win against Soon-woo Kwon, Djokovic became the first player ever to reach 80 singles match wins in each of the 4 Grand Slams. Chris Evert’s words hold a lot of substance as the Serbian legend is on his way to becoming just the 4th men’s player ever to win 4 consecutive Wimbledon titles – Bjorn Borg, Pete Sampras, and Roger Federer being the other 3 names of this elite list.

New struggles for Novak Djokovic in 2022

2022 so far hasn’t been as per Djokovic’s high standards. He wasn’t allowed to partake at the Australian Open and then Nadal proved to be a bit too much in their premature meeting at the Quarter Final stages in Roland Garros. There haven’t been any warm-up matches on grass either for the 20-time Grand Slam winner ahead of Wimbledon 2022.

It’s unusual to not see Djokovic win either of the first 2 Grand Slams of the year. Some reasons for it has been in his hands, the others not so much. Alexander Zverev remains injured, while the controversial decision to exclude Russian players means that Medvedev won’t be featuring in the tournament either. These metrics draw in favor of the 35-year-old, not that he’s required any favors or handovers.

At the 2021 Wimbledon Championships, Djokovic won 74% of the points while serving, the highest among players in the field of 128. On Monday, he landed 61% of first serves, winning 86% of them. He’ll mostly level up according to the quality of opposition he is playing. We can expect even these not so average numbers to improve in the next fortnight.
