“I don’t put my opponents in difficulty,” Heartbroken Dominic Thiem admits he is becoming an easy target after another disappointing loss in Chile

Dominic Thiem, former World No.3, has lost yet another match in the 2023 season. Thiem has been unable to win consecutive matches since the second half of 2022. The Austrian has only won six out of the seven games he has played this year. His injuries have set him back, affecting his form and mindset on-court.

The 2020 US Open winner, made his enormous breakthrough by winning the major title. Shortly after, he sustained a wrist injury, which impaired the player for almost a year. Thiem made his comeback in March 2022, but his efforts remain futile. In a recent interview, Dominic spoke about his inability to perform well on the court.

Thiem lost in his opening round of the Chile ATP 250 tournament. He was defeated by Cristian Garin, 6-2, 7-6 (2), who will advance to the Round of 16. Dominic has won only a single clay-court match in the 2023 season. He sent home Alex Molcan in the Round of 32 of the Argentina Open, before losing in the next match. Since then, he has lost each of his three matches—in Buenos Aires, at the Rio Open, and against Garin.

Regarding his unfruitful season so far, Thiem expressed his regret and disappointment. The 29-year-old has been unable to fully recover from his wrist and abdominal injuries. Moreover, he has been unable to win a single title since his comeback. Regarding his on-court play, Thiem said, “I don’t put my opponents in difficulty.

Dominic also emphasised that he plays much better during his practice sessions. The Austrian had a bit more momentum during the last half of 2022 in comparison. “If I continue at this level, everyone will want to play against me. In training, I do a lot of positive things, but when I enter the court to compete, I don’t know what happens to me” stated Thiem.

Retirement is probably on the horizon for Dominic Thiem, after his statement in a recent ATP podcast. The 29-year-old acknowledges that he is contemplating a life beyond tennis because he is aware that his career is nearing its end. Thiem entered the professional ranks in 2011, but the Austrian has had a difficult few years.

As he gets older, Thiem believes that tennis can no longer be the ‘only part’ of his life. Dominic has been playing for about 12 years. According to him, his injury and the extended break have helped him come to terms with a world outside of tennis. “I’m constantly thinking of a life beyond tennis. I think that tennis was the only part of my life, which is good in one way but if you’re getting older it’s not good anymore…you need other thoughts in your head, other things to do
