Russian tennis player Daria Kasatkina is presently the top singles player in Russia. Towards the end of the 2018 season, she entered the top 10 in the WTA rankings for the first time. Her career so far consists of one doubles championship and four singles titles on the WTA Tour. Kasatkina took up tennis at the age of 6 at the insistence of her older brother.

The 25-year-old Russian has been the focus of intense media scrutiny ever since she recently came out as a lesbian and by sharing a photo with her girlfriend on her Instagram. Kasatkina was also a part of a vlog on YouTube where she discussed her sexuality and denounced Russia for going to war with Ukraine. Her coming out also received a lot of flak from Russian politicians.

After coming out as lesbian, Russia’s top-ranked WTA tennis player Daria Kasatkina received support from the chairman of the State Duma Committee on Physical Culture and Sports, Dmitry Svishchev. Lawmakers reacted harshly towards Daria Kasatkina for participating in a YouTube video in which she acknowledged her identity and her partner, discussed how challenging it is to become a professional tennis player without renouncing her citizenship, and expressed her opposition to the war.

The world No. 12 came out as bisexual last year, and said that her fellow compatriot and athlete Nadya Karpova, who had come out as lesbian, was an inspiration.

When asked if she had a girlfriend, the 25-year-old simply replied, “Yes,” and she has since posted pictures of herself and her girlfriend, figure skater Natalia Zabiiako, on social media. When asked about this situation, Russian lawmaker Dmitry Svishchev said that she should be supported in her tennis career and that discussing her personal life was none of anyone else’s business. He responded, “Her personal life should not interest anyone. Unless it’s yellow press.”
