“He’s chasing history,” Casper Ruud scrutinizes Novak Djokovic’s absence from the US Open
Novak Djokovic & Casper Ruud
“Sheer disappointment” These are the words hanging amongst Novak Djokovic’s fans as recently he was forced to withdraw his name from the US Open in regards to the ban placed on him for not following the Covid-19 vaccination mandate. Witnessing a lot of hues and cries amongst the tennis community and with talks as such, Eurosport was joined by Casper Ruud along with Barbara Schett and Mats Wilander to chew over the authorities’ decision to rule out the Serbian champion.
In a rather protracted conversation, Casper went on to discuss Novak’s absence as unfortunate and expressed his non-appearance deeming a trigger amongst the crowd the Serb was known to bring when performing in a highly anticipated Grand Slam as such. Despite him acknowledging this action would be in the best interest of the court, he also went on to highlight that as a colleague he feels sad about it.
“Having him and Rafa in the final would be so epic”- Casper Ruud on feeling downcast for Novak Djokovic’s no-show for the US Open
Conveying his concerns about the tennis star’s no-show for the Flushing Meadows championship, Casper Ruud, who is a Norwegian tennis professional went on to state that even the Serb’s win at the Wimbledon did not earn him any points and the recent incident also helps him no further. “I think it’s sad that politics will get in his way, or these rules will get in his way,” quoted Ruud while phrasing his heartfelt setback for the same.
While certain fans speculate this was purely a media stunt designed by Casper to avoid any kind of media outlash or hate comments from fans, his talks with Eurosport clearly stated otherwise as the 23-year-old went on to extensively describe and help the tennis community grasp both the pros and cons of the situation. Added to his record, Ruud is the highest-ranked Norwegian tennis player in history and achieved the ranking of World No. 5 as his career high record.
Casper undeniably isn’t the only one wanting Novak Djokovic’s appearance at Flushing Meadows, like Nole’s fans desperately wanting the same, John McEnroe, one of tennis and history’s greatest tennis professional came to the Serbian’s rescue earlier saying it’s not fair not letting him compete in the championship.
Altogether, it seems like a hard time for the tennis community and a probable nightmare for fans across the globe as this time the championship witnesses being a spectator to both Novak Djokovic’s ban and the sad departure of Serena Williams after the tournament is concluded.
