“He’s gonna keep raising his level!” Cameron Norrie heaps praise for Carlos Alcaraz after his difficult win in Cincinnati

Carlos Alcaraz and Cameron Norrie

World number 11 seed, Cameron Norrie had to put up a huge fight against Carlos Alcaraz to secure a place in the semi-finals of the Western and Southern Open. Norrie and Alcaraz played a draining three-setter on Saturday; both firing back after each game. In the end Norrie defeated Alcaraz, 7-6, 6-7, 6-4.

“That was unbelievable”: Cameron Norrie

After the exhausting match, Norrie looked back at his performance and said, “Credit to Carlos. I was up a set and a break, 4-1, and I kind of lost a little bit of vision. I was thinking a little bit too much about the finish line rather than focusing on how I was winning points and I honestly got a little bit tight and he raised his level, didn’t give me anything.”

He further added, “I just wanted to hang tough with him and I think the only place I had him better was the legs and the physicality. So I was just trying to make every rally as physical as I could and make it tough for him to finish points.” With this win the Briton is into his second ATP 1000 Masters semi-final. He had nothing but good words for opponent Alcaraz.

In the post-match interview, Norrie praised Alcaraz’s performance over the last few months and said, “What he’s doing this year is incredible.” He also said, “Nice to get him once, I feel like I need to get him when he’s young- he’s gonna keep raising his level.”

The 19-year-old Spanish player, Alcaraz was looking to win his third Masters 1000 title this year before Norrie raised his level and won the encounter. Nonetheless, Alcaraz has been enjoying a great 2022 season as he is tied with Rafael Nadal for winning the most ATP titles (4) this year.

Alcaraz won his first Masters 1000 tournament in Miami earlier this year. He had also won in Rio de Janeiro and Barcelona. He also defeated Nadal and Djokovic simultaneously in Madrid Open this year and eventually went on to defeat Zverev in the finals to claim the title.
