“Highest profile Brit appoints a Russian coach, a joke!” Twitterati point out the irony in British No.1 Emma Raducanu appointing Dmitry Tursunov as her new coach

Emma Raducanu and Dmitry Tursunov
Emma Raducanu stunned the world last year by winning the US Open on her debut. She became the first qualifier in tennis history to win a grand slam title and she did that at the age of 18 without dropping a set- which speaks volumes about her dominance and talent. Given her multi-cultural heritage and British connection, she became an overnight sensation and was promoted as the next big thing in women’s tennis.
But Raducanu has massively underperformed since winning the US Open and has been consistently getting knocked out of the initial rounds. She hasn’t reached past the quarterfinals of any tour events she has played since then and due to her poor outings, is massively criticized by fans and media all over the world.
She will start her title defense at Flushing Meadows in a month’s time and ahead of that, she has hired Dmitry Tursunov as her new coach. Tursunov is a coaching veteran on tour and has coached the likes of Aryna Sabalenka and Anett Kontaveit in the last few years. But there has been a lot of backlash around this decision.
This is mainly because of Raducanu’s underperformance and the fact that Tursunov was Anett Kontaveit’s coach previously and she was a completely different game style as compared to Raducanu. But fans have also bashed the Brit for hiring a Russian coach. Tursunov is a Russian and had represented Russia during his playing times and given the current conflict between the British government and Russia, this move didn’t bode well with some fans.
Tennis Twitter question Emma Raducanu’s decision to hire a Russian coach

The Russians were not allowed to compete at Wimbledon this year because the tournament in correspondence with the British government decided to ban them to show a stand against the Russian atrocities toward Ukraine.
