“His case is absolutely politicised” Serbian tennis expert reveals Novak Djokovic has the support of Republicans in America and could be allowed for the 2022 US Open

21-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic‘s participation in the 2022 US Open remains doubtful as the politics around the decision to allow the Serbian continues. Djokovic, unvaccinated against Covid-19, is read to skip the Grand Slam if the only way to enter is through vaccination, he however hopes that with a decline in cases, the borders will be relaxed further in the USA.

Currently, the US Open allows unvaccinated players to compete in the Grand Slam starting 29th August in New York but with the State’s policy requiring foreigners entering the USA to be vaccinated, Djokovic will have to sit out from a Grand Slam event for the second time this year. While there have been a lot of discussions around the topic as Djokovic has received the support of American citizens, the government remains adamant about its decision just like Novak.

“Novak Djokovic’s absence from New York would greatly harm the tennis world”: Vuk Brajovic

Vuk Brajovic, a tennis expert from Serbia who is heavily involved in tennis circles of Belgrade and nearby regions recently discussed the Djokovic situation with Kurir Sports where he talked about how Novak has the support from the Republicans in America and with Djokovic being a big player attracting a lot of crowds, the financial motives could influence an exemption for Novak as per Brajovic.

“Novak did everything he could, and the most important thing was to win Wimbledon. Thus, he would create such an impression on the wider world public that his absence from New York would greatly harm the tennis world. Now, less is more relative when we look at the ATP list. He is currently 7th, although if he doesn’t play in America he won’t even be in the top 20. With that, Novak moved the ball to the organizer’s side of the court.

“There have been many initiatives from tennis, politics, and even civil society. Republicans in America sided with Novak. So that Novak became once again a political topic in the country of the Grand Slam organizer, such as Australia. There he was a political victim. The paradox is that sick people can enter the USA and Americans who have not been vaccinated can play the Grand Slam.

“However, Novak, as an extremely healthy but unvaccinated person, cannot play. Unfortunately, Novak’s case is absolutely politicized. It remains to be seen whether some kind of financial thinking will prevail. Because his appearance brings a lot of dollars,” said Brajovic speaking with Kurir.

With a little over a month left for the US Open to start, Djokovic’s fate is running against the time as the US Open Leg series will start from August first week and Djokovic would want to have match preparation before heading to New York if at all he is allowed to step in the USA.
