Holger Rune and Carlos Alcaraz rivalry in making and set to battle for top, claims Frederik Lochte Nielsen
Former Danish Doubles player believes that Carlos Alcaraz has one trait which puts him ahead of Holger Rune.
Holger Rune
Holger Rune and Carlos Alcaraz are undoubtedly two of the brightest stars on the ATP Tour at the moment. Holger Rune announced himself on the big stage in 2022 when he claimed his ATP 1000 title in Paris. The Danish youngster has had a good start to the 2023 season, claiming the Bavarian International Tennis Championship a couple of weeks ago.
Meanwhile, Carlos Alcaraz has looked unstoppable in 2023, after returning from a long injury layoff. The Spaniard claimed the 2023 Barcelona Open title and is on course to defend his title in Madrid. Currently ranked as ATP world number one, Carlos Alcaraz is clearly a step ahead of the rest.
Former doubles tennis player Frederik Lochte Nielsen believes that Carlos Alcaraz vs Holger Rune could become the biggest rivalry in tennis in the years to come. He believes that the two players bring the best out of each other, and have a big platform to achieve the same feat as some of the greatest legends.
“If you’re going to talk about players who have a chance to achieve the same as the greatest legends, I completely agree that Alcaraz and Rune are the two who can do it. I think they have the best platform to build on right now,” Nielsen said.
Frederik Lochte Nielsen says Carlos Alcaraz’s physique gives him an edge
Frederik Lochte Nielsen believes that Carlos Alcaraz’s physique gives him an edge over the rest of the field at the moment. The former tennis player claimed that Holger Rune and Carlos Alcaraz are similar in regard to many aspects, but the latter’s physical abilities give him an extra advantage.
Frederik Lochte Nielsen is confident that Holger Rune would eventually develop physically, which will make him a force to reckon with. He believes that the 2022 Paris Masters champion has no evident weaknesses, and he will just go from strength to strength in the coming years.
“They are two players who really play tennis and get the best out of themselves. The reason why Alcaraz is maybe a little bit further ahead than Rune right now is because Alcaraz is maybe a little bit better physically. He has natural strength, but when Holger builds that up, he will be horrible to face for all players because he has almost no weaknesses,” said Nielsen.
Holger Rune had a disappointing run at the 2023 Madrid Open, where he was defeated in the third round by Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in a close three-set battle. The Dane will return to action at the Italian Masters, which commences next week.
