Danish international Holger Rune crashed out of the 2023 Shanghai Masters disappointingly in the first round itself and it shocked fans all over the world. His performances had been surprisingly poor for the last few tournaments, but losing out to Brandon Nakashima, a player ranked World No. 122, was a bit too much for a player of his caliber.

Moreover, the way he suffered the defeat was even more humiliating. He lost the match 6-0, 6-2, i.e., a bagel was scored against him, making things even worse. After the game, Holger Rune started receiving threats and online abuse from everywhere. This is something that people who lose their money tend to do after unexpected losses. In fact, his sister had to come out with a statement that the Rune family would report any such person to the police if the threats did not stop.

The player himself penned a heartfelt apology on Instagram for his horrible defeat. “I Will figure things out and come back fighting again. Whatever it takes. I am truly sorry to let down my supporters yesterday. And to all my fans in China, I can’t wait to see you again and be in great shape next year ?? @rolexshmasters is an amazing tournament,” Rune wrote in the caption of his latest Instagram post.

Holger Rune’s back injury continues to hold him back

A month ago, Holger Rune’s mother revealed that his back injury was what caused him to perform poorly in the past few tournaments. Holger Rune faced some difficulties in the French Open, which turned into a big injury in the Wimbledon Open. Ever since, the 20-year old has suffered extreme pain in his back every time he goes to serve.

He was expected to end his season early to recover from the injury properly. However, his goal to play in the ATP Finals did not allow him to do that. Hence, the back-to-back poor performances.
