Danish tennis sensation Holger Rune has suffered a shocking first-round elimination from the US Open 2023 after losing to Spain’s Roberto Carballes Baena. Holger Rune was the fourth seed in this tournament, while Carballes Baena is currently ranked World No. 63. The match ended 6-3, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 on a very intense note, and the Spaniard finally took it away.

In the match, Carballes Baena was lethal from the baseline, and he scored as many as seven aces. Holger Rune rose to being a top-5 ranked player in the world only after his current antics at the French Open and the Wimbledon Open. He reached the quarterfinals of both those tournaments. He was, in fact, one of the biggest contenders in the US Open, and crashing out of the tournament this early was not at all expected from him.

Holger Rune was heavily criticized after his loss, not only because of his loss but also because of certain comments that he made ahead of the loss. Ahead of his first round, the Danish had expressed his discontent in having to play his match in one of the outer courts. He had even penned a sarcastic tweet which read,“Usopen site map. In case you can find court 5, this is where I play my first match Monday followed by 11:00,” to take a dig at it.

However, disrespecting the US Open organizers badly backfired for him. After the match, Rune did not blame it on the court and praised Carballes Baena for playing brilliantly. “That’s obviously disappointing,” Holger Rune said. “But not going to blame the court on the loss. He played very, very solid. Credit to him.”

Fans did not miss the opportunity to mock him after his loss, though. Journalist Jose Morgado wrote on Twitter, “Looks like Rune won’t need to check the #USOpen map again this week” taking a dig at Rune’s flushing meadows tweet. Below this tweet, fans started up their own version of mockery aimed at the player. One even jokingly said that probably Rune had wanted to lose at Centre Court.

Rune was a favorite for many in the 2023 US Open, and he has let down his fans a lot. The Danish is often said to be the second-most talented youngster in the tennis world after Carlos Alcaraz, and that is a great achievement in itself.
