Things are not going well for Holger Rune– both on and off the court. While the Dane recently lost out on his coach Boris Becker, the 20-year-old lost to Casper Ruud in the Mexican Open semifinal. Rune lost to the Norwegian in three sets, after being 1-0 ahead. This was Rune’s sixth loss against Ruud in seven matchups.

As Rune lost to Ruud despite having an advantage at many stages of the match, fans criticized the 20-year-old for choking yet again. Social media platform X (formerly Twitter) was filled with posts criticizing the Danish ace for his poor run of form.

Many tennis fans claimed that Rune is the “biggest fraud in tennis” for not being able to live up to the hype. The Dane was criticized for his temperament and also for his abysmal head-to-head record against Ruud.

A season to forget so far for Holger Rune

Holger Rune has been struggling to win a tour-level title since he won the ATP 250 title in Munich last year. The Dane last won a major title way back in 2022 when he won the Paris Masters, defeating Novak Djokovic in the final.

Since then, Rune has not been able to live up to the expectations. It was the same old story for the Danish at the Mexican Open as he lost in the semifinal. Last year, Rune was ousted from the ATP 500 tournament after losing to Alex de Minaur in the semifinal.

The 20-year-old started the 2024 season on a good note as Rune made it to the final at Brisbane International. He was denied a chance to clinch his first title of the season by Grigor Dimitrov who beat the Dane in straight sets.

Rune’s performance further took a hit when he was knocked out of the 2024 Australian Open after losing to World No. 122 Arthur Cazaux in the second round. Things did not go well at the Rotterdam Open too. Rune lost to Alexander Shevchenko in the second round and it was the end of the Dane’s campaign.

While Rune seemed to improve his graph as he fought hard at the Mexican Open, the 20-year-old could not go past Casper Ruud yet again. It was Rune’s third consecutive defeat against the Norwegian.
