The biggest challenge for all players right now is to keep themselves fit for the third Slam, the Wimbledon, of the year, so that they can survive the best of 5 sets marathons. However, sometimes journalists and fans question a player’s injury and that really gets the player upset. Something similar happened at the Queen’s Club event, wherein a journalist questioned Holger Rune‘s injury against Alex de Minaur.
In his semi final match against de Minaur the Danish young ace was struggling to serve after feeling certain discomfort in his wrist. He took a medical time out as well to heal his issues. He eventually lost the match 6-3 7-6, however, the press conference did have him answering a few controversial questions. The journalist asked Rune about his injury by saying this, “You didn’t seem injured before the MTO or even after.” He clearly meant that Rune was just faking it and trying to break the momentum of the match with his time out.
However, the Danish ace rubbished any of those claims by answering sternly. He said, “I didn’t put a serve in the start of the match because I felt my wrist. So I don’t know what you see but that’s how I felt. If you’re not in my body, you shouldn’t say that.” He made it clear to the media that he did have discomfort in his wrist. Also, he made sure he conveys the fact that he knows his body better than anyone else.
Is Holger Rune showing good signs before Wimbledon?
The toughest part of the calendar is to move from clay to grass. Two completely different surfaces. The slow and high bounce on clay to the low and skiddy grass is extremely challenging for the players. Holger Rune so far has shown promising signs of doing well in the transition. He had a very good clay season. Many expected him to be the dark horse in Paris.
He didn’t win it, however, notched up some good performances. Post that, the Danish player competed at the Queen’s Club event to get the necessary practice before Wimbledon. He has played really well on the surface as he made his way through to the semis without dropping a set. Eventually, his wrist came in the way as he lost to de Minaur in the semi-finals after he was unable to serve comfortably. Rune does have a week in his hand to cure himself. The Danish will surely be a threat at the event.
