World No. 7 Holger Rune had an outing to forget at the 2024 Miami Masters. Having made the quarterfinals of the 2024 Indian Wells Masters, fans were hoping for a similar run by the Dane. However, much to the fans’s dismay, he crashed out of Miami in the second round itself.
Seeded sixth, he had a bye in the first round in a major upset as he was drawn against World No. 57 Fabian Marozsan in the second round. However, interestingly enough, Marozsan stunned everyone with a sensational performance to register a 6-1, 6-1 win in just 59 minutes.
The 24-year-old didn’t lose his serve throughout the match, saving all three break points. Rune failed to save a single one, as he was broken five times in the match. Marozsan had 24 winners and four unforced errors, while the 20-year-old had 13 winners and seven unforced errors.
This was a third Top-10 win for the Hungarian, who now advances into the third round. As for Rune, his hardcourt season comes to a temporary halt as the action now moves to the clay season.
The former World No. 4 took to his X (formerly Twitter) account to comment on the match, disclosing that he was not fully fit. He admitted that the ideal situation would have been a withdrawal. Nevertheless, he opted to play, which resulted in an early exit for him.
Unfortunately this was the end of @MiamiOpen. I knew I wasn’t feeling 100% well today but I didn’t imagine my energy level would be so low. Looking back I should’ve pulled out . But it’s always difficult because I had been preparing and wanting to play for a week. Time to go back to Europe . Thanks for the support Miami.Tweeted Rune.
Rune remains in pursuit of reaching the quarterfinals in Miami after another early defeat. He made his tournament debut in 2022 but lost in the qualifiers. He made his main draw debut last year and managed to reach the fourth round. The Dane is now 2-3 at the event after three appearances.
Fans remain unconvinced on Holger Rune’s explanation for his defeat
Rune had a fantastic start to the season, reaching the finals in Brisbane in his season opener. But since then, he has struggled for consistency. His best result since Brisbane came in Montpellier and Acapulco, where he made the semis.

He retired against Borna Coric in the second set in Montpellier. In Mexico, he lost to Casper Ruud. Both of his opponents coincidentally finished runner-up at the respective events. Following his run in Indian Wells, the expectations were high for Rune, but the defeat led to quite a disappointment for his fans.
Many took to social media to criticize him. Others found his tweet as an excuse and unsportsmanlike as it had no mention of Marozsan’s brilliance. The reply section to his tweet was filled with some unwanted advice and unnecessary trolling.
Sharing a wide spectrum of reactions online, here’s what fans have to say:
Marozsan will now take on Alexei Popyrin in hopes of reaching the fourth round at the Masters event. As for Rune, he gets enough time to acclimatize himself to clay before taking the court at the 2024 Monte Carlo Masters.
