Holger Rune bashes ‘unintelligent’ people on social media after backlash over snarky comment on Stan Wawrinka

The World No.8, Holger Rune faced off against the former World No. 3, Stan Wawrinka in the third round at the Indian Wells 2023. Holger faced the defeat against Wawrinka after a three-set struggle by 6-2, 6-7 (5), 7-5. Wawrinka is a three-time Grand Slam Champion and Holger was pretty shocked by his defeat against him. Wawrinka and Holger faced each other for the second time in a Masters 1000 event. Their first clash was in the opening round of the 2022 Paris Masters. Holger Rune defeated Stan Wawrinka after saving three match points against him, eventually becoming the champion of the Paris Masters.
After the match, while shaking hands, the three-time Grand Slam Champion, Wawrinka, made a triggering comment about the 19-year-old Holger. Wawrinka, a 37-year-old, said, “My advice to you is that you stop acting like a baby on the court,” while shaking hands with Rune at the net. Wawrinka’s snarky comment hit a nerve on the 19-year-old as the teenager hits him back at the Indian Wells.
Wawrinka won the third round of Indian Wells against Rune, but Rune made a comment: “you got nothing to say now?” in the reference to their previous encounter. Wawrinka then replied back with “what do you want me to say?”. The second encounter brought back a lot of memories with some snarky comments, and Rune was not in the mood to let it go easily.
Rune faced a lot of harsh criticism from tennis fans about his comment after losing the match. This exchange of words upset the fans a lot, and they criticized him for the same. Furthermore, Rune went online on social media and called out all those criticizing him by making abusive remarks about him. He called them “unintelligent” and “jealous”.

Rune wrote in his Instagram story, “Before you write hate or shitty comments on my or any account, you should be aware of how the majority read your comment and see you as unintelligent…” .
Furthermore, he wrote in his Instagram story, “Harsh judgements are handed out so people feel better about themselves but everyone (if of average or above average intelligence) can see that they are hurting and have been brought down by something that has them feeling defensive (jealousy) – so they become critical of others hoping to restore their self-esteem. Needless to say – with no luck”. He concluded the drama by saying that the people are being disrespectful and defensive. They are making harsh comments in hopes of restoring their self-esteem.
Rune got online hate from many tennis fans after his recent encounter with Wawrinka in the third round of the 2023 Indian Wells. Rune made a comment while shaking hands post-match at the net with a reference to their first encounter at the Paris Masters. However, the fans were quick to respond to him with an online troll.
