Holger Rune made his Madrid Open debut with a thriller tie-break win over Alexander Bublik. The Danish player continues his extraordinary performance since conquering the Munich Open title.
Rune saved the match point at 7/8 in the tie-break and went on to secure his second-round appearance with a 6-1, 4-6, 7-6(9) victory. He closed the wonderful battle of two-hour, four-minutes with a second-serve ace. “Honestly, I’m out of words right now. It was such a tough match. In these kinds of conditions, it’s altitude, it’s very fast compared to what I’ve played so far,” Rune said after the match.
“Bublik we all know how he’s playing. He’s playing super aggressive, taking the ball aggressive and early. So I had to really dig deep and find solutions. I was brave at the end and that’s what made the difference“, he commented during the press conference.
“I just had to focus on myself, try to do everything I can because when he puts those serves in, it’s just too good sometimes“, he stated after their first Head-to-Head.
The Danish player continues his winning streak to five matches since his perfect title defense at Munich Open. There, he saved four match points against Botic van de Zandschulp to lift the ATP 250 trophy. His recent success at the Monte Carlo Masters has elevated him to the 7th rank in Pepperstone ATP Rankings. With his 9-1 score in opening matches this season, he will be facing the 29th seed Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, who defeated his compatriot Albert Ramos-Vinolas by 6-3, 6-4 win.

Holger Rune, a potential threat in Roland Garros 2023
Holger Rune has just started his clay season and the results are fantastic. The 19-year-old has made two final appearances on ATP Tours back-to-back and has secured a career-high ranking of 7. He has now been added to the list of potential winners at the French Open.
The Dane last year, reached the quarter-finals of Roland Garros. He garnered attention from the critics when he got the best of Stefanos Tsitsipas in the third round. Later, he was defeated by Casper Ruud, who reached the finals.
As he started this season with a fourth-round appearance in Australian Open, the teenage sensation has been unstoppable. He will also make his debut in Laver Cup 2023, under Team Europe. The 7th seed stated that is looking forward to the opportunity.
“ I am so honoured to be part of Team Europe in Vancouver this year. I’ve watched Laver Cup over the past few years and love the event. The competition is so intense and getting to really know the personalities of your rivals so unique. It has been goal of mine to make the team and I can’t wait to be a part of it.”
Rune made his debut in Madrid Open and will be playing Alejandra Davidovich Fokina in the second round for a potential ATP Masters 1000 title.
