The Brisbane International started the 2024 season with a bang as a list of players competed against each other for the first ATP title of the season.
Out of the many players, including the returning maestro Rafael Nadal, only two players moved on to the finals of the season opener.
Young Dane Holger Rune arrived in Brisbane with a new look in his eyes, and under the coaching of Boris Becker, he built his path to the finals of the Brisbane International.
The 20-year-old showcased his new self with a variety of shots to book his shot at the title. In the opening rounds, he sent back experienced players like Max Purcell and Alexander Shevchenko before entering the quarterfinals and expressing his dominance over James Duckworth.
The brilliance of the top seed of the tournament continued to impress as he won over Roman Safiullin 6-4,7-6(0). Rune took the first set with ease, but soon his opponent made an uphill climb to comeback. The two exchanged some blows in the second set before the Dane concluded the match and stamped his ticket to the finals.
Holger Rune takes on gritty Grigor Dimitrov at the finals of Brisbane International
Holger Rune, one of the supposed next-gen ‘Big Three’, continues his newly found form as he advances to the finals of the 2023–24 Brisbane International.
He is joined by Bulgarian pro Grigor Dimitrov, who has also been the highlight of the tournament. Dimitrov started his new year with a win over the very experienced Andy Murray before asserting his dominance in further rounds of the tournament.
At the semi-finals, he was up against Jordan Thompson, who was fresh off a win against Rafael Nadal. However, that did not matter to the Bulgarian, who beat the Australian in straight sets to book the last spot in the finals.
Dimitrov takes on Rune, as both the top seeds promise an exciting match to conclude the season-opening tournament. With the Australian Open only a few days away, both players will enter the tournament with good momentum and added confidence.
Fans will witness another battle of the generations as the veteran takes on the young Rune for his first ATP title in seven years. The new Rune, who amazed the fans with his season-end form, continues the fierce gameplay, is on the road to his 5th ATP title, and may even target a maiden Grand Slam in the future.
