Holger Rune produced a magical moment on Thursday as he hit a stunning winner to bring his coach, Boris Becker, to his feet. The defending champion was locked in a tight battle with his opponent, Dominic Thiem, at the Paris Masters. However, he managed to find a moment of brilliance to break the deadlock.
Rune hit a deep return that Thiem managed to send to the sidelines. Nonetheless, Rune then sprinted off the court and hit a stunning forehand for the unreturnable shot. It landed amazingly across the net. The shot was so massive that it drew a reaction from ATP legend and Rune’s coach Boris Becker as well.
Rune went on to win the match and advance to the next round, but it was this stunning winner that stole the show.
The shot was reminiscent of some of the great winners that Boris Becker himself hit during his career on the court. It is also a sign that Rune is developing into a player who can produce moments of magic on the biggest stage, a true next-gen flagbearer for the ATP.
Rune will be hoping to continue his good form at the Paris Masters as he looks to defend his title. He is one of the favorites to win the tournament, and if he can produce such quality shots as the one he hit on Thursday, he will be very difficult to beat.
Holger Rune defeats Domin Thiem at the Paris Masters
Defending champion Holger Rune continued his impressive run of form as he defeated Dominic Thiem in straight sets at the Paris Masters.
The Dane was too good for the Austrian, dictating the tempo of the match and not allowing Thiem to find his rhythm. Rune took the ball early and often, preventing Thiem from using his powerful one-handed backhand to full effect.
The 20-year-old won the first set 6-4, and he broke Thiem’s serve twice in the second set to take a commanding lead. Thiem fought back to break Rune’s serve once, but it was too little too late as Rune held his nerve to serve out the match for a 6-2 victory.
Rune will be looking to continue his good form in the next round, where he is scheduled to face Daniel Altmaier.
