World No. 7 Holger Rune pledged that the ATP Finals 2023 would be his chance to exact revenge on Novak Djokovic. Following his loss to the Serb at the quarter-finals of the Paris Masters, Rune hoped that he would have a chance to upstage the Serb at the ATP Finals.
In a three-set thriller against the Serb, Rune managed to hold his end as much as possible. With the second set running to a tie-breaker, the Dane had managed to win the set. Entering the final set with a set each, Novak Djokovic came in clutch to win the final set and ultimately the match. However, this loss to the World No. 1 led Rune to abandon his campaign to defend his crown at Bercy.
However, Rune was hopeful that the ATP Finals would be his chance for a successful rematch.
If I compare last year's final and this match, it was a similar fight, but I was a little bit more passive.Holgar Rune said as quoted by Euro Sport
The finals of the last edition of the tournament saw a similar battle between the two. However, the day was Rune’s as he defeated the Serb to claim his maiden Masters 1000 title.
Further, the Danish international said:
Maybe it made me more passive, maybe it was more my fault. That's what I'll have to figure out, and I hope to come back and beat him in Turin.
While the match was truly one for the books, only one player could win. Unfortunately for the Dane, it was Djokovic who made it this time. However, the former World No. 4 was hopeful that he would be able to get revenge at Turin.
Holger Rune qualifies for the ATP Finals
Denmark’s Holger Rune qualified for the ATP Finals for the first time following his campaign at the Paris Masters. Ranked No. 7 in the world, he had collected enough points to qualify for the season-ending tournament.
The Dane missed a chance to play at the tournaments by just a few points. Following Carlos Alcaraz‘s injury, Taylor Fritz had taken his place. However, Rune was merely 40 points behind the American. However, he has made a sure slot for him at the Finals with a maiden qualification.
Alexander Zverev accompanied Rune in being the last two players to qualify for the event. While it is Rune’s first time at the tournament, this is not the case for the German. Zverev has proven that he is quite proficient at the season-ender. He had two titles at the tournament to speak for his performance at the event.
