Holger Rune is among the most talented players on the tour currently. The Danish prodigy has seen a meteoric rise in his rankings in the past 12 months, as he is currently ranked number six in the world. He has already had some deep runs at Grand Slam events and is determined to go all the way in the upcoming tournaments.

Rune recently spoke about his career ambitions, and whether he preferred being the World No.1 or winning Grand Slam titles. The 20-year-old has been a consistent performer at major events, which includes quarterfinal appearances at the 2023 French Open and at Wimbledon.

He lost to Casper Ruud in four sets in the quarterfinals in Paris and was humbled by the eventual champion Carlos Alcaraz in the last eight at Wimbledon. However, the youngster has shown definite signs of promise, and a maiden Grand Slam title looks inevitable in the near future.

Rune kickstarts his hard-court season at the 2023 Canadian Open this week. He is seeded fifth at the tournament, as he received a bye in the first round. The 20-year-old is also scheduled to compete at the Cincinnati Masters next week, as the US Open is just around the corner. The Dane stated that given a choice, he would pick winning a Grand Slam title over a World No. 1 ranking any day.

“I’m more motivated to win tournaments. I would rather win a Grand Slam & then be sixth in the world, than not win a Grand Slam & then be #1 in the world. So for me it’s about tournaments,” said Rune. (H/T: as per TennisUptoDate)

The final Major of the year takes place at the Flushing Meadows in late August. Holger Rune has not enjoyed much success on hard courts this season, with a majority of his better results coming on clay. However, given the fact that Holger Rune thrives on fast surfaces, he could be one of the players to watch out for at the 2023 US Open.
