Holger Rune reached the quarter-finals of the Roland Garros for the second consecutive year. However, the 20-year-old faced a crushing defeat at the hands of Casper Ruud. During a conversation with France TV (translations provided by Tennis Majors), Patrick Mouratoglou cited that the mental fatigue got the best of the Danish player.

The World No.6 has played some incredible tennis this year. Rune reached the fourth round of the Australian Open but lost the match to the brilliant performance of Andrey Rublev. With the start of the clay tours, the Dane finished his Monte-Carlo run with a runner-up trophy. He claimed his first title of the season at the Munich Open. Later, Rune booked his finals seat in the Italian Open but was defeated by Daniil Medvedev in straight sets.

During an interview with France TV, Patrick Mouratoglou stated that Rune has played numerous matches but was dealing with mental fatigue than a physical one. He said the World No.6 was not the favorite in Paris but cited it as a hurdle for Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic on their road to championship.

“It was his first Grand Slam tournament as an outside chance. He was not the favorite, but he was named as one of the players that could disturb Alcaraz and Djokovic. It’s very new for him and he has never been totally relaxed, that’s certain,” he said.

Rune earlier faced a round of 32 defeat in Madrid, at the hands of Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.

Holger Rune had an incredible performance on the clay surface. The World No.6 reached three finals of the ATP clay tours and claimed the trophy of Munich Open after defeating Botic Van de Zandschulp in three sets. At the Roland Garros, Rune overcame the challenge of Genaro Alberto Olivieri and Francisco Cerundolo in the third and fourth rounds respectively.

The 20-year-old booked his second consecutive quarter-finals clash with Casper Ruud at the major but was defeated in four sets. Looking at their ATP Head2Head, both the players had six meetings till now, with Ruud leading the record by 5-1.

At the post-match press conference, the World No.6 praised Ruud for his brilliant performance in the match. Rune said that he started the match quite badly and failed to find his level in the first two sets.

“I think I started very, very bad, unfortunately. I didn’t find my level at all the first two sets. Then I started to play a little bit better, found some rhythm in my game, managed to put him under pressure. But, again, it’s too costly to start so late. Against a great player like him, he deserved to win because, first of all, I wasn’t there the first two sets,” he said.
