Holger Rune ready to ‘do anything’ to win the French Open after a nervy first round win

Holger Rune

Danish World No.6 Holger Rune gives a confident interview post his nervy start at the French Open. After losing the second set and being pushed to a tie-breaker in the third set, the Danish wunderkind got rid of Christopher Eubanks in four sets in the opening round. The final score was 6-4, 3-6, 7-6(7-2), 6-2. He will face the French box office player Gael Monfils in a much anticipated second round.

As per Holger Rune’s words, “It was super difficult (the first round match). There’s always first-round nerves, and Chris played very freely, hitting well and serving big. I had to adjust to the conditions. This is one of my favourite tournaments, and I would do anything to win Roland-Garros; I’m super happy to come through.”

Gael Monfils passed the opening round test against the unseeded Argentinian Sebastian Baez in a five-set thriller. The final score was 3-6, 6-3, 7-5, 1-6, 7-5. It looked difficult for the French man after losing cheaply in the fourth set but the crowd was all behind the hometown boy to push through the fifth set.

The Danish World No.6 Holger Rune is playing some of his best tennis in the past months. Though he failed in the finals of the Rome Masters against World No.3 Daniil Medvedev, he is one of the top contenders to win the title after the absence of the Spanish Great Rafael Nadal. The second win of his career against Novak Djokovic in the quarter-finals of the Rome Masters showed his true class and athleticism.

Rune has always been on top of controversies as well. But the results show that the Danish is able to keep all those distractions off the chart when the real hunt begins on the court. His ability to handle pressure and control the crucial points will be key in his Parisian Dirt campaign where the margins of error are low and the competition is super close.

Rune is drawn in the other half of Novak Djokovic and the Spanish World No.1 Carlos Alcaraz. If he can find his rhythm in Paris, a first Grand Slam final will not be so difficult for the Danish. With Daniil Medvedev already crashed out, he has real chances to make a deeper run.
