“My heart was almost in my brain”- Holger Rune reveals a series of emotions during the final set of the 2022 Paris Masters finals

Danish World No.18 (soon to be Number 10) Holger Rune shared his series of emotions after grabbing his first maiden Masters-1000 title in Paris beating Serbian World No.7 Novak Djokovic. The dramatic match had all the twists and turns, especially in the final set. The Danish finally won the battle of clutch moments in an epic fashion 3-6 6-3 7-5 in 2 hours and 34 minutes.
In the post-match presentation ceremony, Rune started by saying that the title he won today means the world to him that too by beating one of the greatest players ever -Novak Djokovic. Rune quoted,”It means everything to me, a perfect way to finish the week. It’s a privilege to share the court with Novak. I’m feeling lovely to be honest, it’s the best feeling.”
Rune continued with the excitement of reaching the Top 10 for the first time in ATP rankings as he said “If you told me four weeks ago, I would be Top 10… I would be like ‘What, sorry?’. Now I’m here and I’m super proud“
The Danish 19-year-old then talked about the final game of the third set which had some animalistic rallies and extra-clutch moments.
“It was the most stressful game of my life. My heart was almost in my brain. I was already starting to think about the tie-break. I’m very proud I could finish it.“
Holger Rune on fast track to greatness
By winning the maiden ATP-100 Masters title at the age of just 19 and breaking into ATP Top-10 for the first time, Holger Rune has made huge steps upward in his career. Starting the campaign by beating 3-time-Grand Slam Champion Stan Wawrinka in the first round after saving 3 match points, Th Danish teenager never looked back.
The second-round victory was against Polish World No.10 Hubert Hurkacz, then came Russian World No.9 Andrey Rublev in the third round.
His quarter-final victory was against the Spanish World No.1 Carlos Alcaraz, which again defied the odds. The semi-final victory against Canadian World No.8 Felix Auger Aliassime (6-4,6-2) is even more special since the latter was on a 16-match winning streak, including a victory over World No.1 Carlos Alcaraz.
In the ‘battle of generations’, The Danish wonder boy out-clutched the Serbian Great in a “Djokovic” way as he fought back from 1 set down and then a breakdown in the final set. He was down 1-3 30-40 at a point but the deep backhand returns fired at the right time as he edged past the 35-year-old to make tennis history.
The 2000 generation players are already making the right noises in the tennis world starting with the emergence of Spanish World No.1 Carlos Alcaraz. With this historic run by Rune now, the Tennis world is slowly seeing a generation shift. The future is here.
