Holger Rune took on to Twitter to clarify his stance against the allegations of ‘bad behaviour’ during his match in Madrid Open. The Dane stated that the controversy rose due to poor communication with the audience regarding the situation on the court.

The World No.6 faced a tough loss in round of 32, at the hands of 35th seed Alejandro Davidovich Fokina. During the match, Rune’s second serve was called ‘good’ by the electronic line but the umpire and the spaniard voted against it. This led to an on-court drama when during the supervisor’s discussion, the teenager was called out for erasing the ball mark. The crowd went furious and started rallying ‘faults’ and ‘double faults’ at every opportunity they got. His complaint regarding the crowd behaviour also led to an argument with the chair umpire.

On the other hand, fans expressed support for Rune, as he was targeted due to the opponent being a Spaniard. They also labelled the crowd’s behaviour as ‘pathetic’ and ‘outrageous’. Holger Rune recently won the Munich Open 2023, two times in a row, after defeating Botic van de Zandschulp. He also reached the finals in Monte Carlo Masters but lost to Andrey Rublev.

Holger Rune was shown an early exit in Madrid Open, by the 32nd seed Alejandro Davidovich Fokina. The Spaniard registered his win by 7-6(1), 5-7, 7-5(5) as the thrilling match lasted for three hours, five minutes. The Spanish player delivered his fourth Top 10 win after defeating the 6th seed in an intense third-set tie-breaker. This was their first ATP Head2Head and the results turned in the favour of Fokina. He called the match a tough one and also praised Rune’s outstanding debut run.

” Mentally and physically it was very hard. Rune is a very good player. It was always tough games and we had to stay focussed on every service because you never know when you can have the break point”, he said at the press conference.

“I had my chances in the third set too, but I had a lot of tension and I was a little bit anxious to finish the point. But I did well and I’m very happy”, he further commented. Naturally, the match was nothing less of a drama, as it began with a wrong serve call and had a dramatic tie-break end. The home crowd was ‘All-In’ for their favourite as they cheered him towards a sensational win.

“I felt the energy and I was like, ‘OK, I don’t want to go home. I want to win this game. It doesn’t matter if I am cramping, doesn’t matter if I have a lot of tension, but I want to win this match”, he spoke in regard to the audience’s support.

Davidovich Fokina will next face Borna Coric, who defeated the 12th seed Hubert Hurkacz, in the round of 16.
