Holger Rune crashed out of the Madrid Open in a midnight thriller against Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina. The interesting rallies and points played on court were not the only entertainment of the night. The main buzz of the match was created when Fokina argued with the coach, accusing him of using the referral system.

At Holger’s serve 40-0, Davidovich challenged the serve being called IN. The referral system clearly showed the ball landing half on the white line, making the score 4-3 in favor of Rune. But Fokina wouldn’t agree with the decision and refused to play until he had a chat with the match supervisor.

What escalated the event further was Holger Rune going very close to the contentious mark. While the cameras focused on Alejandro Davidovich Fokina discussing with the referee, there was suddenly an uproar. Apparently, the young Dane had walked very close to the mark, and that riled up the Spanish crowd supporting Fokina, who started booing Rune instantly. The crowd thought World No. 7 had rubbed the point off the court. Later on, an angle that had captured the shot showed Holger going close to the mark and examining it.

Later on, chair umpire Carlos Bernardes had a long chat with the 20-year-old Dane, telling him that he shouldn’t do anything to agitate the crowd. Though Holger Rune kept denying that he didn’t do anything, Carlos said the Spanish crowd can get tough and he can’t control them. Post-point challenge, the crowd was quite unfair to the Dane, booing him or applauding if he made an unforced error. At 5-5, Carlos Bernardes also spoke to the crowd in Spanish, asking them to respect the players and not clap or create a ruckus between serves.

Though most Netizens were in favor of the 20-year-old Holger Rune, there were some Rune haters who pointed out the kid was at fault. Even the commentators who didn’t think that the young Dane was doing anything sinister, but was quite naïve at the moment. He should have been ideally standing far away from the mark and not come close to it.

The biggest villain in this whole event happened to be the Madrid Crowd. The way the Spanish spectators reacted and behaved toward Holger Rune was detestable for most tennis fans. Most people felt it was quite awful, the booing that went on till the deep end of the 1st set.
