World No. 6 Holger Rune has been in blistering touch this year, taking the sport by storm. Unfortunately, he couldn’t last long at the recently played Wimbledon Championships, finally going down in the quarterfinals to the eventual champion, Carlos Alcaraz. The young Danish star was held as one of the competition’s favorites, and just two weeks after that, he decided not to play at the Croatian Open.
The Dane has stated that he has been suffering from serious injury problems and will need to recover before getting back on the court yet again. He said, “Unfortunately, I won’t be able to play at the Croatia Open this year, as I have issues with my lower back, an injury that prevented me from performing at my usual level this week. Starting from Monday, I will undergo the necessary treatments and then take some rest.”
He also put his support for the Croatian Open director, Tomislav Poljak saying, “Wish you an excellent tournament in Umag, and I hope to see you next year.” Rune was lately seen participating at the Hopman Cup held in Nice this week, but it wasn’t a get competition for him after all not being able to pick up a single set in the total four matches he played.
How has Rune fared so far this year?
It would be a bad statement to say that Holger Rune has had the tennis world on his racquet this year making it to the later stage of the majority of tournaments he has played in. He has made it to the semi-finals of the Open Sud De France, Mexican Open, and the Queen’s Club Championships losing to Rune in the first two tournaments and to De Minaur in the last one.
Apart from this, he also has final appearances at the Monte Carlos Masters and the Italian Open where he lost to Andrey Rublev and Daniil Medvedev respectively. He won his first and only competition this year at the Bavarian International in late April beating the likes of Yannick Hanfmann, Cristian Garin, Christopher O’Connell, and Botic vande Zandschulp on the way.
