Holger Rune

Holger Rune, a Danish youngster, has knocked out 2021 French Open runner-up Stefanos Tsitsipas to reach his first major quarterfinal at Roland Garros. On Monday in Paris, the 40th-ranked Rune defeated fourth-seeded Tsitsipas 7-5, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 at Court Philippe Chatrier. Tsitsipas is the first player from the top eight seeds to be eliminated from the men’s draw.

Until last week, Holger Rune had never won a Grand Slam match, having gone 0-2 in his previous attempts at the sport’s top four events. But the hard-hitting 19-year-old now joins sixth-seeded Carlos Alcaraz in the men’s quarterfinals, marking the first time since Hendrik Dreekmann and Andrei Medvedev in the 1994 French Open that there have been two teenagers in the men’s quarterfinals.

After going ahead 5-2 in the fourth set, Rune struggled to close out the match against Tsitsipas. Rune’s lead was cut to 5-4 when he dropped nine points in a row. Then he had to save three break points before serving out his career’s biggest win. Nevertheless, Rune will face No. 8 seed Casper Ruud, who made history by becoming the first Norwegian to reach the round of eight at the French Open.
