“Hope she’s never exonerated of the doping allegations” Simona Halep gets flak from fans for crediting Patrick Mouratoglou for Holger Rune’s Paris Masters title

Simona Halep was one of the many tennis enthusiasts mesmerized by Holger Rune‘s performances last week. The 19-year-old went on to win his maiden Masters-1000 title at the 2022 Paris Masters and did it in style. Up against the defending and 6-time champion Novak Djokovic, Rune staged a brilliant comeback to win the title.
Djokovic drew the first blood, but Rune also had his moments in the first set. In the second set, Rune had the upper hand throughout and the third set was as balanced as possible. Rune however managed to hold his fort and clinch his third title of the season while also securing the World No. 10 rank.
Rune’s victory made him a recipient of many wishes and former World No. 1 and 2-time major winner Halep was also one of those. However, more interestingly, the Romanian’s wish got on the wrong side of tennis fans as she not only congratulated Rune, but also mentioned their common coach, Patrick Mouratoglou.
“Congrats @holgerrune, I enjoyed watching you! Proud of my coach @patrickmouratoglou, special person!” wrote Halep on her Instagram story. Fans got angry as it looked like she credited the teen’s success majorly to the French coach giving him a large part of the credit.
Simona Halep trolled for her message to Holger Rune
While Halep‘s intention could be unbiased, for many tennis fans on Twitter, it didn’t come out as such. The Romanian was subjected to a lot of criticism and trolling by Twitter users for touting Mouratoglou more than the teenager. Angry tweets were made against Halep as fans expressed their disappointment.
Halep continues to be under investigation for the presence of roxadustat, a banned substance by WADA, in her samples from the 2022 US Open. The case was the most mentioned subject by fans who criticized her comments. While it was insensitive on the fans’ part, things got further worse for the Romanian.
Following Halep’s divorce within a year of her marriage to Toni Iuruc, Mouratoglou has been baselessly blamed for the end of Halep’s marriage. Fans linked Halep and Mouratoglou’s relationship to her story as well, which was a poor move on their part undoubtedly. Rune, however, did not share the same feelings as other fans as he reposted Halep’s story on his personal Instagram account.
