Emma Raducanu explains her decision to hire Sebastian Sachs as her new coach as she looks to return to winning ways
Sebastian Sachs and Emma Raducanu
British tennis sensation Emma Raducanu had dreamy start to her career that only few could have ever achieved. Entering a singles Grand Slam at the tender age of 18 as a qualifier and winning it is no mean achievement as she did in 2021 US Open. British No 1, Raducanu was looking for similar success in 2022, but it could not happen due to various reasons.
As the next season beckons on the horizon, Raducanu is focused to leave the challenges of 2022 behind and is all set for a successful 2023 as she appointed former German player Sebastian Sachs as her new coach. Sachs will be Raducanu’s fifth coach in the past 18 months.
Explaining the reason for Sachs’ appointment, Raducanu said, “Yeah, we are trialling until the end of the year. Just seeing how it goes really. It has been going really well so far. I have only done a week with him.” He’s a really calm influence. He is on it, switched on and excited to see how it goes,” Raducanu further added.
Former German player Sachs earlier helped Swiss professional Belinda Bencic in her run to the golden glory at the Tokyo Olympics last year and also has worked with Belarusian former world No. 1 Victoria Azarenka. With that being said, it will be pretty interesting to watch how his partnership with Raducanu pans out in the upcoming season.
Emma Raducanu suffers defeat to Ons Jabeur on her comeback match
On Friday, Emma Raducanu made a comeback on court after injury forced off court time, against Tunisian player Ons Jabeur. In the exhibition match in the Mubadala World Tennis Championship she lost to Jabeur by 5-7 6-3 10-8. At the post-match performance assessment, Raducanu looked optimistic and felt happy to be playing again, despite the defeat.
“Last year I had a bit of a shocker. Amazing to play here in front of all of you, this is Ons’ house so thank you for having me,” Raducanu said while talking about her performance. Last year at the same tournament also, the Brit faced Jabeur after the Swiss player Belinda Bencic tested positive for Covid at the last minute.
After drafting Sachs as her new coach, Raducanu will be hoping to return to winning ways in 2023 which she will start at the ASB Classics tournament, scheduled to start early next month in Auckland. There, she would get a chance to further test her fitness on the court before going into the season’s first Grand Slam in Melbourne. Earlier talking to SheerLuxe, Raducanu mentioned being ‘injury free’ will be her New Year resolution.
