How many times has Rafael Nadal lost a match at Roland Garros?

Rafael Nadal

Rafael Nadal is the thirteen times winner of the French Open. He has been the favorite at the Roland Garros for decades and no other player has won any Grand Slam this many times on any surface. He has been termed ‘the king of clay for his domination of clay courts. With the number of titles he has won in Paris, it seems unlikely that he would have ever lost on the French Clay, but he has lost three times in Paris.

Rafael Nadal has an incredible 109-3 win-loss record in the French Open. He started his title-winning campaign in Paris in 2005 and has racked up 13 titles till 2021. Nadal is always the favorite at the French Open, this time around maybe less so, but in two of those three losses, it was shocking that Nadal lost.

Nadal has only lost to two players in his 16 French Open campaigns, namely Robin Söderling and Novak Djokovic.

In one of the greatest upsets in the history of the French Open, Robin Soderling defeated Nadal in the fourth round with a 2-6, 7-6(2), 4-6, 6-7(2) score. This was the first-ever loss for Nadal on Parisian clay. Soderling however couldn’t complete his incredulous campaign and lost to Roger Federer in the final of the French Open 2009. Nadal exacted his revenge on Soderling in the 2010 French Open as he defeated the Swede in the final.

The only player other than Soderling to have defeated Rafa at Roland Garros is Novak Djokovic. He has done it in the quarterfinals of the French Open in 2015, where he beat Rafa 7-5, 6-3, 6-1, and then again in the 2021 French Open in the semifinal beating Nadal 3-6, 6-3, 7-6, 6-2. Though Djokovic lost the 2015 Roland Garros final to Stan Wawrinka, he won the title for the second time in 2021. Djokovic is the player to have won the most sets against Rafa in Paris.

Rafael Nadal leads Novak Djokovic 7-2 in the French Open and they will lock horns for the tenth time in the quarterfinals of the French Open 2022.
