Coco Gauff created history on Saturday with her US Open win. The 19-year-old became the first American teenager to win the title after Serena Williams won it last at 17 years of age back in 1999. Though Gauff was one of the favorites for the title win, she shocked several tennis fanatics with her Final round win over World No. 2, Aryna Sabalenka.

The US Open Championship marks the biggest win for the teenager this year. She also won the Citi Open at Washington and the Cincinnati Open prior to the Grand Slam, where she beat World No.1 Iga Swiatek for the first time after seven failed attempts. The only disappointing performance in 2023 from Gauff came at Wimbledon when she lost the first-round match.

In a press conference after her win, Gauff expressed her gratitude for the black champions who played before and inspired her. “It’s an honor to be in that stat with Althea, Gibson, Serena, Venus, Naomi, Sloane…they paved the way for me to be here,” the 19-year-old said.

“I remember Sloane winning this trophy in 2017. I had lost in the final of junior US Open. It was an inspiring moment for me to see her win because I grew up watching her & I’ve known Sloane since I was 10,” she told the media. The teenager also expressed her love for the Williams sisters. “Obviously, Serena & Venus, words can’t describe what they’ve meant to me,” she said.

Coco Gauff expressed her desire to continue the legacy and hoped to inspire younger girls to dream big and claim the championship one day, much like how she looked up to the women in the field before her.

Gauff demolished Sabalenka with a 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 win over her. Many credit her new coach, Brad Gilbert, for Gauff’s improved tournament performance this year. Gauff had revealed to the media earlier that Gilbert helped the youngster improve her mental state during matches.
