Hubert Hurkacz won the Masters 1000 tournament for the second time after defeating Andrey Rublev. The match, which took place on Sunday with tennis great Roger Federer watching from the stands, added to the prestige of the competition. The Polish, in his winning speech, forgot to mention Federer.

The 2021 Miami Open champion, Hurkacz, displayed his skill on the court and defeated the tough Russian with a score of 6-3, 3-6, 7-6(8). The victory solidified his position as a tennis force to be reckoned with. It gave him his second trophy of the year and second Masters 1000 title.

Hurkacz voiced his joy at winning the Shanghai Masters in the post-match press conference. “In my speech I tried to thank everyone. I forgot to mention Roger. I appreciate him coming, so I’m sorry. Hope he doesn’t take it personally (laughs),” said the Polish.

Hurkacz also discussed his opinions on the event increasing to a 96-player draw, which is a first for the tournament. He commented that the enlarged draw had increased the level of competitiveness and made things even more interesting because there were so many winners in the running.

Hubert Hurkacz Seals Shanghai Masters

The Polish unleashed an incredible 21 aces in a show of forceful and accurate serving. He displayed outstanding skill on his first serve by winning 81 percent of those crucial points. Hurkacz persevered throughout the final, which had hard-hitting exchanges, saving a championship point at 5/6 in the tie-break. After an exciting two hours and nine minutes, he scored on his fourth opportunity to secure the victory.

Hurkacz, who has now won seven times at the tour level, added the ATP Masters 1000 championship to his victory in Miami in 2021. With his second Top 10 triumph of the year, the 26-year-old moves up to 11th in the ATP rankings. With this victory, he moves within 335 points of Holger Rune.

After winning at Monte-Carlo in April, Rublev was vying for his second Masters 1000 title as the closely contested match played out. The Russian, who displayed outstanding play throughout the competition, maintained his excellent position in the season’s rankings by finishing sixth in the Pepperstone ATP Live Race to Turin.
