Serena Williams was handed a bitter farewell as she lost her third-round match against Ajla Tomljanovic at the 2022 US Open. She had made her way into the third round after defeating the top-seed Anett Kontaveit in the second round playing some good level of tennis. She received an emotional farewell in a fully packed stadium at the Arthur Ashe where she won her first singles title in 1999 and the crowd was in full support of the champion.
She had managed to win only one match out of the four she played since her comeback in June after a gap of one year. She also did not fair well in the hard-court tournaments that were the build-up to the US Open but looked strong with her performances on her final innings at Flushing Meadows. Even though it was her final Grand Slam event, her inconsistent performance was a bit of concern as she had less practice time.
She is one of the greatest female athletes in the world who has been a pioneer in changing women’s tennis and taking it to new heights. She has inspired millions around the world and has won 23 singles Grand Slam titles, the most by a player in the Open era, and is just one behind Margaret Court‘s all-time record of 24 titles. Serena Williams last won her title at the Australian Open in 2017.
Margaret Court slams Serena Williams for showing a lack of admiration
Margaret Court, the former legend from Australia during an interview, spoke about how often her achievements have been ignored especially by the former world number one Serena Williams. Court also stated that she did not receive the same kind of reception from Serena even though she accolades her achievements. She said “Serena, I’ve admired her as a player. But I don’t think she has ever admired me.“
She also stated that Serena ignored her completely but also should have shown a little respect towards her opponent at US Open. She added “I thought it was bad that Williams didn’t mention her opponent more when she spoke. We were taught to honor our opponent. We respected one another. Serena has played seven years more than I did.“
Court has been very vocal with her thoughts and opinions on various issues and has been on the receiving end of her claims. She even claimed for receiving bad reception during Wimbledon and was left feeling lonely even after being a three-time champion.
