It was a somewhat sedate match between two of the world’s best players after a stunning set of quarter-finals and a twisty first semi-final, but reigning champion Stefanos Tsitsipas got the job done, defeating Alexander Zverev 6-4, 6-2.
Both players struggled in the first set, with five service breaks. Tsitsipas, with yet another break, managed to pull it out, 6-4 after 43 minutes. In the previous game, Zverev’s serve had appeared shaky, but a double-fault helped him narrow the difference to 5-4. However, Tsitsipas finished the match slightly over half an hour later. With this victory, the Greek not only took a step forward toward defending his title but also crushed Alexander Zverev’s chances of sitting at the top of the ATP ranking ladder.
“I was able to play good tennis today”- Stefanos Tsitsipas

Stefanos Tsitsipas, the defending champion, defeated Alexander Zverev 6-4 6-2 on Court Rainier III in 75 minutes to reach his second consecutive Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters final. In the first set, Zverev came back from a break down twice, but Tsitsipas broke for the third time in the 10th game to take the first set 6-4.
The first four games of the second set were played on serve. Tsitsipas closed off the second set 6-2 by winning the final four games from 2-2, including two service breaks. Tsitsipas has reached the final of the Masters 1000 for the fourth time in his career. He also has extended his lead to 7-3 in his 10 head-to-head matches against Zverev.
“It was good. I don’t know whether the long match gave me some rhythm, but I was able to play good tennis today. I am happy with the level I was able to execute and come up some good ideas on the court”, said Tsitsipas in his on-court interview.
In tomorrow’s final, the Greek will defend his 2021 championship against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, who defeated Grigor Dimitrov 6-4 6-7 (2-7) 6-3. “It’s going to take a little bit more. Alejandro is on a good run, in a good rhythm. I have played him before, he is a good opponent. He is a good opponent. I have had big battles against him and I am going to try and be as ready as possible”, said Stefanos Tsitsipas whilst concluding.
