Alexander Zverev’s quest for the French Open crown began today against Austrian Sebastian Ofner. The number three seeded German entered the match as the overwhelming favourite, and he did not disappoint. The German overcame the Austrian in a three-set thriller (6-2, 6-4, 6-4) and stole the match from him.
After losing in the semi-finals of the Italian Open, Zverev entered the tournament. He’s had a strong clay-court season so far, finishing second in the Madrid Open. He also advanced to the Monte Carlo Masters semifinals. This is his fifth clay-court tournament of the year, and he’s off to a strong start.

Despite losing the first game of the first set, Alexander Zverev swiftly recovered. With his first service game, he evened the score. Zevev’s incredible forehand crosses and winners dominated the next two games. The Austrian, on the other hand, attempted to even the score by winning the next set and bringing the score to 3-2.
Sebastian Ofner displayed his magic and won the first game of the second set. Even though he snatched the game with the help of a large rally, the German’s lack of expertise in his first serve was evident in the second game of the set. In the second set, both players appeared to be in top form, as neither of them was ready to give the other a point-scoring opportunity. The 25-year-old, on the other hand, used his experience and expertise on the court to hit an incredible return that gave him the set with a final score of 6-4.
The Austrian started the first set with another game to his name. At first, he appeared to be the more dominant player of the two, but Sascha showed off his serve magic and put his opponent in a situation where he couldn’t respond to his great serves. Finally, Alexander Zverev’s solid return winner, along with his two fast aces, helped him win the game and the match.

In his on-court interview, the German said, “Usually I start a grand slam tournament with a five-set match, with a few hours on the court but Sergi told me today not to so that so I listened to him for once. But, I am happy with the match, especially against Sebastian who played already three matches here. He was playing very well, so I am happy with the start here.”
He further elaborated on his strong performances in this year’s clay-court season and also said that he feels “incredibly nice” to play in front of a full stadium. “Yeah I had a very stable clay court season, semis in Monte Carlo, finals in Madrid, semis in Rome but I didn’t win the tournaments. So, you know I am somebody who always likes to win, rather than be stable. Hopefully, I can do that here. Hopefully, i can play my best tennis here. It’s great to have the crowd back at full capacity. Last year was 50%, the year before was less. So, for the first time in three years, we are here playing in front of a full stadium, which is incredibly nice.”
“I think there’s nothing bigger than a gold medal in sports, doesn’t matter which sport are you coming from. I think everybody is very excited that Paris is the next hold of the Olympic game. I think it’s going to be incredible Olympic games for all the different kinda sports but I think for tennis, especially because we are playing at such a historic site as Roland-Garros,” he added upon being asked about his incredible performance in the Olympics.
Finally, Alexander Zverev concluded by praising his coach Sergi Bruguera for pushing him to his best limits. “He reminds me that he won the tournament two times everyday. So, he always needs to remind me how much better he was than me. But, i hope i can still manage to win two grand slams maybe or maybe more hopefully. Hopefully, we can do something special this year.”
