Frenchman Gilles Simon hung his boots on home soil at the Paris Masters after losing to Felix Auger-Aliassime in the Round of 16 in straight sets 1-6,3-6. This marked an end to his illustrious career in which he won over 500 matches and 14 titles. Retiring at 37, Simon achieved the highest ranking of No.6 in 2009 and won almost $16 million in prize money.
Simon announced a few weeks back that the Paris Masters will be his last professional tournament and in the first two rounds defeated two formidable opponents- Andy Murray and Taylor Fritz before losing to Auger-Aliassime. In the on-court interview, Simon addressed his wife and thanked her for all her contributions over the years.
He finished his speech by remembering his wife and thanked her for being by his side whenever he needed her. “My wife is hiding in the stands. She should have been on the court. Thank you for everything. I know how difficult all this was for you. I am finishing (this speech) with you, because otherwise it would have been too hard,” Simon said in his on-court interview. “All these moments when you were proud of me, or you wanted me to stop. All these arrivals at the hotel at 2 in the morning,”

Simon further expressed his happiness towards her by saying that it’s all over now and she can have all of his time henceforth. He thanked her for letting him live his passion when she handled things perfectly at home.
“We both know how difficult this role in the background can be. I am so happy to tell you that it’s over now. I will be there. I thank you for letting me live my passion for so long. It was so important to know that everything was being handled perfectly at home. I love you with all my heart and thank you for it all,” he said.
