Dominic Thiem has been plagued with injuries in the last couple of years. The Austrian has not quite been at his absolute best ever since the end of the 2020 season, where he also claimed the US Open title. Nevertheless, Dominic Thiem is optimistic about the 2023 season, and is raring to play to his full potential once again.

Ranked just outside the top 100, Dominic Thiem admits that it is going to be a very difficult season for him. The Austrian is expected to face higher ranked players in the early rounds of tournaments, until he accumulates some ATP points to push his ranking higher. The 2020 US Open champion’s last competitive appearance came at the Vienna Open in November, where he was defeated by Daniil Medvedev in the second round.

It’s still going to be very difficult because I’m not seeded and I can face anyone at the start of any tournament. But I’m in good shape, I’m happy to compete and I can’t wait to get started,” said Thiem.

Dominic Thiem has enlisted his goals for the upcoming season. The Austrian hopes to be competitive on the big stages once again, and lock horns against the top players. “My goal is to be on the path again, to achieve that, to be able to beat anyone, to go far in every tournament and I hope that in the year 2023 that will happen again,” Thiem added.

Dominic Thiem certainly showed glimpses of returning to his best towards the end of the season. The Austrian reached the semifinals of the Gijon and European Open to cap off an underwhelming season. The two-time French Open runner-up could only play his first professional match of the season in March, when he returned back from injury.

Dominic Thiem’s first big test in 2023 comes in the form of the Australian Open. He ended as the runner-up at the 2020 edition of the tournament, losing to Novak Djokovic in a five-set thriller. He was forced to withdraw from the Australian Open this year, owing to an injury.
