Nick Kyrgios is buckling up for his fourth-round battle against World No.1 Daniil Medvedev at the US Open. Kyrgios agonizingly defeated American J.J Wolf in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2, 6-3. Nick Kyrgios is displaying incredible form this season but his candour on the court is not always appreciated by tennis fans.

Kyrgios won the Citi Open this year and also reached the final of the Wimbledon Championship but lost to Novak Djokovic in four sets. Despite his Wimbledon history, Kyrgios is looking to reach another grand slam final at this year’s US Open. Recently, he was given a code violation after he was found spitting at his own player’s box. Now, American star Coco Gauff is speaking in support of Kyrgios and sharing her experiences which involve him.

Coco Gauff had kind words for Kyrgios when she was asked about him during her post-match press conference after the third round. She said, “I know there’s things on the court that he does that people don’t agree with. Overall I think he’s a nice person. At least he’s always been to me. I remember I first hit with him, he probably doesn’t remember this, I was 13 years old at Miami Open. He finished his practice, hit with me for, like, 30 minutes.”

She then added, “It’s just things like that that stands out for me. That’s why I feel like I can never dislike him. So I think people paint him as a bad guy. I feel around the grounds, at least my experience of him, he’s not.”

When asked about Kyrgios’ 2022 US Open run, she said, “If he keeps it up, I think he can go far. He can win the tournament. We all know he has the ability to. He was close at Wimbledon. I always, always root for him, no matter who he’s playing, to be honest.”
