Frances Tiafoe has long been the upcoming star from the US Tennis but the American has remained unlucky in the final stages of the Tour events as he has often failed in the business end of the week that has seen his trophy cabinet having only the 2018 Delray Beach Open title.
Tiafoe however now is 3 wins away from winning his biggest career title after he defeated 22-time Grand Slam champion Rafael Nadal in the 4th round of the ongoing 2022 US Open. Frances won the match 6-4, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 to become the only man this season to defeat Nadal in a Grand Slam match.
“My dad was a maintenance worker, mother was a nurse,”: Frances Tiafoe
With the monumental win over Nadal taking Frances to his second career Grand Slam quarter-final and first at the US Open, the American got emotional recalling his parent’s struggle to provide for the family and spoke about why the victory is so important for his parents more than him.
“I’m a son of immigrants, both parents grew up in Sierra Leone, born and raised in Sierra Leone. Came to the States early ’90s, late ’80s, around there. Whatever. They met here, had me and my twin brother. My dad, being a maintenance worker at a club, helped to build a club ’99.
“My mom being a nurse, working two jobs, working overtime through the nights. Yeah, I mean, us being around tennis was kind of gets us getting out of our neighbourhood. My dad kind of being able to watch us. It wasn’t anything supposed to be like this.
“Once we got in the game of tennis, it was like my dad was like, It would be awesome if you guys can use this as a full scholarship to school. I mean, we couldn’t afford a university. So use the game of tennis,” said Tiaofe speaking in his press conference.
The win over Rafa takes Frances in his second career Grand Slam quarter-final where he will now take on 9th seeded Andrey Rublev who comes after a win over British No.1 Cameron Norrie defeating the southpaw in straight-sets.
