World No. 40 Holger Rune had a great run at the 2022 French Open where the 19-year old in his debut at the major reached the quarter-finals in the very first attempt. During the run, he defeated Denis Shapovalov in the first round in straight sets, then beat last year’s runner-up and heavy title contender Stefanos Tsitsipas in the fourth round in one of the biggest tournament upsets.

Rune then clashed with World No. 8 Casper Ruud in what became the first all-Scandavanian quarter-final at the French Open and despite the best efforts of Rune, he could not withstand the challenge of the 23-year old Norwegian who took the win in 4-sets and qualified for his first-ever Grand Slam semi-final.

The match however remained marred with controversies which emerged afterwards. The drama started with Rune giving a cold handshake at the net to Ruud who was stunned by the reaction. Later Holger accused Casper of screaming in his face and taunting him in the locker room with both players and their parents too being involved in a battle of words calling each other liars.

With Rune’s mother Aneke being a constant presence in his players’ box as she was also one of his first coaches, she was spotted mid-match heading towards the exit. Upon looking it was found out that Holger had a mid-match altercation being frustrated with his position of losing in the match and screaming towards his box and it was assumed that his words were directed towards his mother. The youngster however cleared the air around the speculation.

“I love my mother very much, I did not kick her off the track. When I’m frustrated I need to be left, I can’t be listening to my mother and my coach. I wasn’t specifically looking for her to leave, in the match with Stefanos also she left. She knows how to give me peace”, said Rune as per the AFP.

With the ugly scenes overshadowing the youngster’s incredible run, it was nevertheless a good learning for the youngster who looks destined for greater things and hopefully gets control of his emotions as well so that his achievements are not overlooked because of unnecessary controversies.
