23-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams will always go down as the finest ever to pick the tennis racket. Over a glorious career that spanned 27 years, Williams conquered all possible titles and achievements to cement her place at Mount Rushmore of Tennis whenever it’s made.
After winning her second Wimbledon in 2003, Williams had to wait till 2009 for her third Venus Rosewater Dish. With consistent fitness issues, one such problem flared up for her in the fourth round of the 2007 Wimbledon when she was up against Daniela Hantuchova.
Williams was cramping bad and on a couple of occasions was found on the court in extreme pain as her trainers rushed for her help. While Williams went on to win the match in 3-sets after a second-set tiebreak, Williams thanked the rain break before the third set that allowed her to relax before continuing playing.
“I’ve never dealt with such pain. I can’t believe I won really. I think I was definitely saved by the rain. I couldn’t move before the rain. “I just decided at one point, it was over and I was going to die trying. I figured my heart wouldn’t give out, so I had a good chance of making it,” said Serena after her win during her press conference.

While Williams managed to get the better of Hantuchova, she failed to go past the quarter-finals as she lost to Justine Henin in the decider set. While she suffered a loss, in the end, the Williams family had a moment to rejoice as Venus Williams would go on to win the title ranked 31st, the lowest-ever for a Wimbledon women’s champion to date.
Venus and Serena contested for the Wimbledon title in 2008 where the elder sister managed to make a successful title defence with a straight-set victory. Serena however denied her sister a hattrick of titles as she ended her drought at Wimbledon in 2009 following her straight-set win in the finals.
Serena won 7 titles at Wimbledon during her career, tied for the second spot with Steffi Graf and 2 titles behind Martina Navratilova in the list for most Wimbledon wins. Williams however suffered a drought at the Championships in between her second and third title at the All-England Court.
