“I did a lot of mistakes that I kind of don’t accept,” Iga Swiatek swallows bitter pills as Beatriz Haddad Maia defeats her in 3rd round in Toronto
Iga Swiatek
World No. 1 Iga Swiatek had to suffer another 3rd round defeat after she was ousted by the in-form Brazilian and current World No. 24 Beatriz Haddad Maia in the 2022 Canadian Open. The Brazilian won the match 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 to register her first win over a World No. 1 and hand Iga her 6th defeat of the season stopping her from breaching the 50-win mark yesterday. Iga had a 20-match hardcourt winning streak snapped along with a winning streak of 23-matches in WTA-1000 events.
Maia has been in great form throughout the season and the consistency helped her in the match with Swiatek which almost went for 3 hours as the two players put in everything in the battle. For Iga, it was just a wake-up call ahead of the 2022 US Open where she will be one of the biggest title favourites and would want to perform at that level having reached the semis of the 2022 Australian Open and winning the 2022 French Open.
“I had a hard time”: Iga Swiatek on playing a left-handed player like Beatriz Haddad Maia
With right-handed players facing issues against left-handed players due to the change of dynamics of the match, the windy conditions in Toronto added to the Pole’s misery who admitted that she failed to adjust to the conditions and Beatriz resulting in her exit from the tournament.
“I think at the beginning I struggled to find my rhythm on the court. Probably because, you know, she’s lefty and I had a hard time adjusting to her serve. And plus the wind. I think without the wind I would manage. But it was pretty crazy out there. I think she used the conditions better than me. And when she was playing with the wind she was playing really strong balls. And sometimes I was late for them.
“And on the other hand she was able to, you know, put the balls in. But, you know, in the third set which was pretty tight I knew what mistakes I’ve made. So I know what I want to work on and what I want to improve before next tournament, for sure. Next time maybe I’m going to be able to find, even though the conditions are going to be bad, more solutions and just play more solid. Because I did a lot of mistakes that I kind of don’t accept,” said Swiatek after her loss speaking with the press.
Iga will now feature in the 2022 Cincinnati Open and will look to put her best foot forward as it will most likely be the final week of preparation for her US Open campaign as the Grand Slam begins on 29th August in New York and presents Swiatek with a brilliant chance to win Grand Slam title number 3.
