Former champion Simona Halep bowed out of the second round of the 2022 French Open after losing to Qinwen Zheng despite starting the match on a positive note. She lost the match in three sets 6-2,2-6,1-6 and later revealed that she had a mid-match panic attack after which she wasn’t able to focus at all.

Halep has been out of form for the last 2 years and to get back on top, she hired Patrick Mouratoglou as her coach earlier this year. Mouratoglou is one of the most successful coaches on the tour and when Halep announced her partnership with him, it was expected that her woes will finally end.

But the duo hasn’t delivered yet as promised. Halep’s best result of the season has been a semifinal outing at the Indian Wells Masters and she hasn’t had much impact on her ranking too after joining hands with the Frenchman. After Halep’s second-round exit at Paris, Mouratoglou took to social media to apologize and take responsibility for her results.

He said that he’s always been proud of his successes with his players but at the same time, it’s his duty to take accountability if things don’t go the right way. He took full responsibility for Halep’s results in Madrid, Rome, and Paris.

“I’ve always been proud of my successes with my players, but then I also have to acknowledge when I’m not doing a good enough job. The results we’ve had the past month in Madrid, Rome, and Roland-Garros are insufficient for someone of Simona Halep’s caliber and I take full responsibility for them,” he wrote.

“She is fully dedicated, and motivated, gives it everything on every ball. She is a champion – her track record speaks for itself. I expect much better from myself and I want to extend my apologies to her fans who have always been so supportive,” he concluded.

Halep too responded to Mouratoglou’s heartful message and said that they work as a team so he shouldn’t take all the blame on himself. She added that she is ready for more.

“As the picture shows, a team is made with at least 2 people. We gave our best every day but we were not good enough, yet! I am ready for more,” she commented under the Instagram post.
