23rd-seeded Nick Kyrgios registered yet another win over World No. 1 Daniil Medvedev, the defending champion and the top seed at the 2022 US Open. Clashing for the 5th time, Nick’s win in New York was his 4th over the Russian as Kyrgios won the match 7-6(11), 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.

The win takes Kyrgios into the quarter-finals of the US Open for the very first time as he had not went past the 3rd round ever before. Kyrgios defeated Medvedev for the 2nd time this year having earlier taken him down in the Canadian Masters as well.

“I’ve got so much expectations, I’m finally able to show it,”: Nick Kyrgios

Kyrgios has made a stellar comeback this season from being outside the Top-100 at the start of the year to being seeded at the US Open. The Australian has suddenly looked very focused in the matches and discussed what has been the big change in his approach.

“I just feel like I’m playing a lot for myself. I’ve just got a lot of people, lot of support and also at the same time I got a lot of people doubting me and trying to bring me down all the time as well so I’m playing for just a lot of motivation in the back of my mind.

“I have been away from home for 4 months, my whole team has and we don’t get to see our families like other tennis players do the majority of the time so I am trying to make it worthwhile, trying to make it a memorable ride for all of us and hopefully we can get it done and go back home and really celebrate.

“I’m just trying to not let people down. I felt tired of letting people down. Now I’m making people proud. I’ve said it before, I was in this press conference room a while ago, I had lost my third round and it was the worst feeling because I’ve got so much expectations, I’m finally able to show it now and I feel like I’ve been working really hard.

“I’ve just got a lot of motivation but yeah as I said, if I win a Grand Slam, I don’t know how much motivation I’d have afterwards because it’s extremely hard to do,” said Kyrgios in his press conference.

Kyrgios will now take on 27th seeded and Medvedev’s compatriot Karen Khachanov for a place in the semi-finals of the US Open which will also be his second semi-final appearance of the season if he is able to move past Khachanov who comes defeating Pablo Carreno Busta.
